Vicky Vaughn Shea is a book designer and art director with more than 25 years of experience creating visually engaging books across a wide range of publishing categories. She collaborates closely with publishers, editorial teams, authors, photographers, illustrators, and printers to develop books that combine strong design, compelling imagery, and clear visual storytelling.
Over the course of her career, Vicky has designed and laid out hundreds of books, including nonfiction coffee table books, corporate histories, cookbooks, guidebooks, gardening and home improvement titles, travel books, gift books, and children’s books. Her work often involves managing complex image programs and developing thoughtful layouts that help readers navigate visual, informational, and narrative content.
In addition to creative direction, Vicky brings deep expertise in the technical side of book production. She has extensive experience with full-color printing, file management, and prepress workflows, and has worked on press in both the United States and overseas to ensure the highest quality standards. Her production knowledge allows her to successfully manage complex printing processes while maintaining careful attention to detail.
Vicky’s work has received numerous industry honors, including multiple IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards and a PubWest Design Award. She regularly attends publishing and design conferences, including Adobe MAX and CreativePro events, to stay current with evolving design practices and publishing technologies.
Vicky has always been passionate about books and visual storytelling. When she discovered book design, she knew she had found her life path. She especially enjoys designing visual history books and researching archives to uncover unique photographs and collections that bring stories to life on the page.
When she’s not designing books, she can often be found trail running in the Sierra mountains or exploring the desert trails around Reno.

Designed and art directed Journey into the Wild, a large-format wildlife photography book for Southwestern Publishing House, working with editor Betsy Holt and the owners of Nature’s Best Photography. The goal was to create a visually striking book with minimal text where every spread offered a sense of discovery.
I developed a dynamic layout system allowing the photography to drive the storytelling. For the cover, I selected a powerful black-and-white photograph of a roaring lion and created a distinctive design by rotating the title vertically so the lion appears to roar into the typography. The image was produced as a five-color cover using CMYK plus PMS metallic copper.
Printed over 20,000 copies, the book received the 2024 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Silver Award for Cover Design (Large Format).

Served as Art Director for this illustrated history book while working in-house at Tehabi Books / Time-Life Books. Collaborated with Senior Vice President Tom Lewis, author Susan Wels, editor Garrett Brown, and map illustrator Brian Battles to create a visually rich narrative of the events of Pearl Harbor.
The project included extensive archival research, sourcing historical images from the Library of Congress and other national collections. I worked on-site with historian Daniel Martinez at the USS Arizona Memorial, directed a local photographer for new photography, and researched archival photo collections to develop the book’s visual narrative.
The book printed over 20,000 copies in its first run, went on to multiple reprints, and received the 2002 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Gold Award for Coffee Table Books.

Designed the interior layout for Periwinkle’s Journey, published by Blue Sneaker Press in partnership with the San Diego Zoo. I worked closely with Development Director Carrie Hasler, author Judy Petersen-Fleming, and illustrator Suzy Spafford to create an engaging visual flow that keeps young readers turning the pages.
Working directly with the illustrator allowed the design and illustrations to evolve together through multiple rounds of revisions. The final layout balances playful typography and dynamic illustration placement to support the story.
The book received the 2016 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Gold Award for First Children’s / Young Adult title.

Hired by Glen Canyon Conservancy to redesign the Cottonwood Canyon: Geology Road Guide, working with project manager Amanda Boston to make the guide easier to use for travelers exploring the canyon.
The redesign focused on improving navigation for drivers and hikers. I introduced visual navigation tools including section bars along the page edge, shaded side‑trip callouts, a dedicated hiking section, and directional arrows within the text to help readers follow the mileage along the route.
The redesigned guide received Road Publication of the Year (2026) from the Public Lands Alliance.
